Kenyan Ministry
First Baptist is blessed to support Pastor Raphael Olero and the Amazing Grace Orphans and Widows Care Center (AGOWC) in south western Kenya, near Lake Victoria. He and his wife, Eve are pictured below.
Pastor Olero joined the First Baptist Church in the fall of 2005 as an Anglican Minister and was re-baptized by immersion. While in the US, Pastor Olero was a faithful and loved spiritual leader at First Baptist and continued his study at John Leland Center for Theological Studies for an advanced degree with a full scholarship.
Before returning to Kenya as a Baptist missionary, he was ordained by First Baptist of Gaithersburg in May of 2006.
AGWOCC is situated on 5 acres of land located on the outskirts of the small village of Pap Onditi, near the city of Kisumu. The center is primarily a day care center where the widows and orphans come for meals, fellowship and counseling. Four of the orphans are housed in Pastor Raphael's house. There is another bulding, his original home, that house 2 more orphans and the kitchen.
While electricty has just reached the area, it is very expensive to hook up. Instead, the center has solar power that provides lighting and recharge capabilities for radios and cell phonse. The center has a well, one of two in the area, that supplies water.
The center supports 19 widows and 23 orphans whom are cared for by a volunteer staff of 5.
